I was wondering if anyone is fimiliar with finite element mesh generation. Basically, a model is cut into tiny little cubes, then the surface points are moved around to closely match the original surface of the model. These finite element models are then used for all kinds of engineering computer simulations, stress, flow, blah blah.

I would like to know if anyone has a good idea of how to get cinema 4d to copy this effect after a render (aka show these little elements on the shaded surface). For example. If i look at any straight on view (top, right, left, ect) i should see cuts in planes only orthoginal to my computer screen. Rendering edges simply puts a line on the mesh of a model, and i would have no idea how to make a mesh that resembles a finite element model with only cuts in the x/y/z planes.

Applying a texture of a grid does not quite work as distorition in the surface creates distortion in the final rendered texture.

Let me know if you have ideas, thanks!

Do you have a visual reference so we can see what you exactly mean? I only know finite elements by my brother who is a car engineer and used to learn this stuff for his diploma. But I have no real clue what they are actually used for. 🙂

    https://www.ekkinc.com/software/kent/nadca99_html/nad99.htm

scroll half way down the page to figures 4-6 a and b.

Those should give you a very good idea of what kind of render i hope to achieve
