I’ve modeled a patch of grass with a polygon object and I want to create a very large field out of it. (so I can have big long camera sweeps) I tried creating several instances of it and just moving the instances around to cover space, but eventually I got a “Out of Memory” error. I could try creating a larger patch of grass to start with, thus having to make less instances, but maybe you guys have better methods of going about it.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Jake

If you have thinking particles, use the pSurface node to generate partcles all over the surface (your filed shape). Then use the pShape node to instance the blade polygon shape to each particle. Do some random scale, and rotations and viola.

Then you can create custom user sliders for things like density, and randomness of scale.

Or if you have the Jenna plugs, you can use the mesharray plug.

Have a look at DPIT Nature Spirit (https://www.dpit2.de). It has special tools to create grass. It also allows instancing of groups. So you could for example create a small area of grass and distribute this area on a huge area without using too much RAM. Download the demo and see for yourself. 🙂
