But really, for $5000 base model, it makes the argument for going for a PC (HP z8) more attractive that ever…and makes the price of them seem reasonable.

The up-front cost isn’t as big a deal if you depreciate it either 2 years or 4 years. Quite a value, I’d say. Unless… something pops up in real-world use that wasn’t found and fixed in testing.
I have a very nice, older but well-appointed large imac sitting “on ice” in storage, with a full FCStudio setup, because of a blown graphics card, and even if I bought a used or reduced cost OEM card off eBay or someplace now and installed it myself, it’s, financially speaking, almost a wash versus buying a new regular iMac retina at around $2k, considering the rest of the old imac has wear and may manifest other failures… And the OS upgrades may also cause the repair to become moot.
Will the new imac pro manifest any issues with overheated boards or whatever? I’d rather let someone else beta test it for a year or so for me, to find out.

It appears that the iMac Pro in a useful form will be about $6399 (B&H). If you look at the HP Z31X monitor, it’s
$3999 for that monitor (at B&H) so $6399 for the “complete system” is a pretty good deal. The Mac includes for that price the Vega 64, 64 Gig RAM, and the 10G card (and the monitor).I mean – we do want to compare “apples to apples” (pardon the pun).

Just ordered two identical 8 core with 64 gig of ram and the 1TB SSD. Seems like the internal SSD is a screamer at 3GB per second max. Mainly getting these for the 10gig ethernet to go with a Qnap 12 bay NAS (8 drive and four 2.5″ SSD) which has two 10Gige ports plus four gigabit ports. We have 8 Seagate Constellation E3 2TB drives and will go with a RAID 5 config.
Should suffice just fine.
We will pair the two iMac Pros with the Dell Ultrawide 34″ monitor which is the exact same vertical height as the iMac and same vertical resolution at 1440. Total monitor horizontal width is 57″! Not sure how that will be with so much horizontal width!

Aja 4k I/O will be the outboard video device (we are all LHI’s currently).

how will you connect the Dell 34″ monitor to the iMac Pro ?

We are assuming a thunderbolt 3.0 to 2.0 adapter and then thunderbolt to Display port to the monitor.
The Aja IO will downconvert to HDSDI which will feed our Panasonic Plasma 1080 monitors and studio Panasonic and or JVC LCD professional monitors for viewing.
And for fun, if we actually cut a 4K project I have a Seiki 65 inch 4k monitor hanging on the wall and can take the AJA IO out to that as well.

Hey Bob…why does the Qnap have three HDMI ports on the back? Also it has internal M2 memory card slots for very fast caching…do you recommend adding those if only 2 or 3 people are using the drives?

The QNAP can run as a virtual machine (you load windows onto it when you create a virtual machine) and you will then have 3 monitors. The HDMI out’s are for playout, if you want to use this as a plex server, or use Video Station. You don’t have to play back on your computer monitor. With that said, I have never tried to use the HDMI ports ever, and I actually don’t know how to setup a VM on the QNAP.
No, I don’t recommend the M.2 for caching for video for 2 – 3 people. I have not tried Qtier, but I have tried normal caching with the QNAP many times (with TVS-1282T, and TS-1685) and it does not increase performance for video editing.Bob Zelin
