Public domain usage
I was informed I recently posted my inquiry on Public Domain footage on the wrong forum and was suggested to try this one. Hopeful of a better response. :}
I am a retired video guy who have two very musically talented sons. I would like to turn a few of their original compositions into music videos. Naturally I want them to succeed so they can walk up and accept their Grammys (if that helps supplement my meager social security on the way, well…). I have tons of photos, and videos of them performing but some of their music tends to lend itself more to ‘outside’ scenes. People dancing, beauty exteriors, old and new, that kind of stuff. If I could shoot them performing myself I would. However there is a slight distance (and monetary) challenge; I live on an island and they are a few thousand miles away, stateside. :{
Which is why I thought Public domain footage might help fill in the gaps. I’m not trying to bootleg movies or take the food off tables such as Artbeats. If I had the cash I would gladly contribute…
I am familiar with archive.org and similar sites. Archive, I’ve figured out. I just haven’t figured out how to download others. :{

Hey John,
Well done for helping your sons out to reach that Grammy – no shame in doing that.
However, what you are proposing can have a serious and detrimental impact on your sons careers.
Why?
Because you are generating a product with the intention of helping them progress professionally. And you want to create that product be using other peoples content without paying for it – that would be the same as your sons using known songs and tunes from the likes of Michael Jackson, Beatles, Rolling Stones etc and calling that their own – if that happens, your sons will in all likelihood end with a $million dollar lawsuit and no musical career.Sorry to say it, but you need to make do with what you’ve got, or get your camera our, or pay for footage. Although, you may find that some of the libraries (NOT Artbeats) such as NASA will allow you to use elements of their footage for free for the right cause.

While Mads is normally spot on, I wonder if this time he’s misunderstood, and you want to use material that’s been offered for free, if you can find it?
I’d have a different concern, however. Ifyour sons are many, many miles away and not involved with you in the production of your planned videos for their music, might it be better to leave it all in their capable hands? They can take responsibility for finding music video practitioners who can help them develop the video look and feel they want to best represent their music to their market. Time to let go, perhaps …?

Hey Mike,
My bad, you’re right, in my haste to reply I missed the word “not” in there.
Having said that, the example video from John had plenty of public archive footage in it. Which one should always be cautious about using for commercial purposes.

All rights issues notwithstanding, the creative direction of the spot you linked has a very small demographic.

Thanks for the feedback. The footage I would really like to find/use would be people. People rising up. Rising from their current situations, positions, emotions. Reaching their potentials.
