Posted by Dave Navarro on June 9, 2008 at 3:48 amIs there anything like LiveType from Final Cut on the PC/Windows side?

June 9, 2008 at 1:44 pmthis is about the closest I’ve seen so far, but I’m not in the market for a Windows program to do titling and such.
actually, that software may not do actual titling. It does custom backgrounds, and looks like it does 3D text, but I can’t find a feature set.

June 9, 2008 at 3:37 pmI’m usually delighted that so much of LT’s cheesy effects can easily be recreated with After Effects. However, AE’s text animation system controls still boggle me.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

June 9, 2008 at 3:54 pmWhat’s so hard about AE’s text animation system? The only weirdness I’ve seen comes due to the pivot point being in a weird place in some instances. That’s fixed usually by setting the paragraph to centered, or whichever way you want the pivot point to work…
Also, there are text controllers and layer controllers, which can get confusing, but allow for all kinds of control.
How does it work how you think it shouldn’t, or how does it not work the way you think it should?
just curious. Not saying you’re wrong…

“You hit it.
I recently worked as a T.A. in a college course for advanced Premiere users who were moving up to learning AE. I had 12 kids who could grasp Shatter, parenting, and rudimentary (pre-built) expressions. Only one of these kids could comprehend the text animators. With AE, I always assume user error on my part. Not much to complain about with the interface. There probably is no better way to build the controls for text animations.
If you attempt to deconstruct Livetype animations, you’ll see Apple really screwed up that interface. It’s near impossible to change much of anything. Which makes the presets perilously attractive.

June 11, 2008 at 8:07 pmI have never said no to a piece of software. When I was MUCH younger in my graphics years, I shelled out the cash for that program.
It is THE WORST software I have ever had the displeasure of using. Please don’t use it. I beg you.
