rendering of off-screen part of a layer
hi. thanks for any help.
i want to include a very large and intensive astro photograph in a movie so i can zoom into it. i am concerned about the file size and wondered whether the off-screen part of a layer is rendered into the movie. i did a test with a small picture in a layer. rendered it. than i moved the picture so just a bit was showing in the layer and rendered again. it rendered must faster this time, but the file was larger? i’m confused.

Sometimes a video can take a long time to render but be small in file size once it’s done, so that’s fine. You should also not worry about items out of view being ‘included’ in the movie. If a comp is 720×576 pixels (or whatever), those are the only pixels that will be in the final movie file.

While that is true, keep in mind, that the larger your image, the more processor and Ram intensive it will be while you work in AE – EVEN if not on screen. Really big images tend to make AE give up. But if you can render your video (AE doesn’t crash or give you error messages) then as it’s been stated, you’re movie file will not be any larger just because you used a large image.
You may also want to do a search in the forums here for advice on doing massive zoom-ins. It has been talked about a lot.
