captioning and sign language – screen acerage
Have a project that looks like it’s going to have to be both captioned and have sign language translation at the same time – across pretty much the whole video.
Does anyone have any thoughts on including both of these things and having any screen left to be able to display content?

ever watch CNN – they relegate the anchor to about 1/4 of the screen, with all the tickers and other graphics.
If doing open captions (always visible) these can stay in the lower 1/3, like a super. As for the sign language, it is traditional to have a PIP also in the lower 1/3.
I would do some mockups to show the client ahead of time to make sure they like the approach.

A 16:9 letterbox in a 4:3 window gives you plenty of room to wipe or PIP a signer in on one side, and put the captioning in the black bottom area of the letterbox for good contrast while still being inside safe title.

Is this a DVD presentation, where a user can choose to see it
1) without captioning/signing
2)with captioning
3)with signing
4) both signing and captioning -
Thanks for the advice – a 4:3 in a 16:9 looks like it leaves the right shapes.
It will be on DVD – the option to have captioning and signing on at the same time will be there, and likely used quite frequently given the subject matter.
