Generational Divide in Copyright Attitude
David Pogue has written a very revealing piece in the NY Times about how the “kids today” feel toward copyright protection.
He makes lots of speeches, and one of his most successful devices is to pose a series of questions about copying DVDs and CDs, and ask the audience whether copying in such-and-such a situation is Wrong. Examples:
Is it wrong to make a copy of an HBO broadcast using your DVD recorder, so you can see it later? (no hands — timeshifting is even legal in fact)
If you’ve bought a CD and it’s scratched, is it wrong to go to the library and borrow the same CD and rip it? (some hands go up)
Is it wrong to borrow CDs you haven’t bought and rip them? (many more hands go up)
etc.
When he made the same talk to a bunch of college kids, it BOMBED. NO HANDS EVER WENT UP.
Something to think about when you’re evaluating business deals that involve trusting your clients to come to you for the copies. In short, unless you’re dealing with senior citizens, don’t expect not to get ripped off – literally.
