AECS3 doesn’t “like” my audio… Why not?
Posted by David Lincoln brooks on May 7, 2008 at 7:56 amI’ve tried on several occasions to import into AECS3 an AVI which carries, as its audio, an MP3 coding of 44.1 KHz and 192 kbits/s.
The video portion then exported from AECS3 gets beautifully exported, while no audio is ever present.
Yes, I’ve clicked render audio in the rendering dialogues.
I’ve rummaged through the Helpfiles but can find no response to this particular eventuality.
I actually think AECS3 did not import the audio at the get-go, but I cannot think why not…
Help?
Thanks, DAVID

May 7, 2008 at 8:16 amJust a thought but have you tried downloading a sound program (I use Goldwave), importing the AVI into there and then saving that sound file as a WAV?
I know that I had a nightmare a while back with MP3 related sounds and that this sorted it out although back then it did import the audio it just refused to sync throughout the piece…
Goldwave can be found here for a free download

May 7, 2008 at 3:19 pmYeesh! Yes. AE chokes on MP3’s.
Sadly it took us a year of random crashes and sluggish performance to finally figure that one out.
MP3 Waveform redraws in particular are obscenely slow….just don’t go there….DON’T DO IT MAN! No compressed audio in the AE Timeline! As previously stated. Open the file in another app….SAVE AS into another uncompressed format. (AIF/WAV, etc.)
I edit video. I post sometimes.

I play drums. I drink scotch.
I like TV.Done typing now.

May 7, 2008 at 8:33 pmI am SO glad that you guys set me straight on this little issue…. especially as the Helpfiles very blithely state that AECS3 is happy both accepting and exporting MP3 audiotracks.
I absolutely know that AE is not meant to be an audio editing environment at all… but I figured surely it would let my audio “pass through unscathed”, as it were.

June 13, 2008 at 9:55 amI’ve had the same problems but I found that converting to a WAV file at least allows the track to be imported into AE. I always end up adding my audio in Sony Vegas since AE seems to seriously screw up the quality of my audio, both in terms of timing and quality. Even after scrutinizing the settings when exporting (particularly to Quick Time) I still don’t trust AE with my sounds.

June 13, 2008 at 11:42 amAgain: This is ONLY true when dealing with compressed formats like MP3. Uncompressed audio formats like AIF (Windows), AIFF (Mac), and uncompressed WAV files are all fine and offer not an ounce of trouble.
Why insist on recompressing an already compressed format — and then wonder why it gives problems???
Don’t do it and it won’t…
I have used AE since 1994 and I have never had audio issues. Ever. Methinks the problem may lie with the user in this case.

June 16, 2008 at 2:44 amWell, you see, my problem has everything in the world to do with my damned videocam: it records audio in Dolby AC3 and video in MPEG-2.
To make everything more palatable for AE, I’ve been using a media converter which turns my video portion into h.264 and audio into PCM WAV (stereo, 44100). All wrapped up in a QT MOV.
And guess what? I’m still not getting any sound in my outputted renders! (Though I am getting sound in my RAM previews in the project space.)
Yes, I am clicking “Audio active” in my output modules.
Are you just about ready to see a grown man cry?
Once and for all, tell me what audio input format AE likes— and which it will ouput!— and I’ll shut up!
Thanks, DAVE
