What camera lens would give me this effect?
Posted by Jerry Fines on May 6, 2008 at 9:16 pmI’m trying achieve a strong ‘single point perspective’ using the camera, but I’m not sure what lens would give me the best sense of this. Would anyone know? I’m not used to the AE 3D.

May 6, 2008 at 9:56 pmwhat do you mean by ‘single point perspective’? I believe a 35mm lens comes closest to how a human eye sees things, if that helps. Otherwise, explain exactly what you’re trying to do.

May 7, 2008 at 12:26 amNo lens will give you single point perspective, because they are round and the number of points is determined by the shape you are looking at.
However, if you want to approximate it, have your perspective point directly in front of the camera. that way your other 5 perspective points (behind, top, bottom, left and right) will be far off camera. The more perpendicular you are to any one axis, the less visible it will be.If you turn the camera, say 45 degrees left, you will get more of a 2-point, and if you turn it 45 degrees up as well, then more like 3 point.
If you want isometric perspective, then it can’t be done with lenses and you have to “fake it” with a 2D comp, unless there is an AE setting I don’t know about.

In order to approach an orthographic view in AE you would need to use a camera with an incredibly high zoom and distance from the subject. An orthographic view is achieved when the zoom and distance of the camera both approach infinity… Unfortunately the limits of AE fall far short of that mark =)

May 7, 2008 at 4:06 amI stand corrected… That would probably do it. It would be pretty darn close actually. There would be nearly nil perspective, which could be a problem, but if you rotate your subject, say at a 30 degree angle two axes, you would get some orthographic projection… Hmmm.. gonna have to try that one.. I wonder what the minimum AE camera angle is…and how far I’d have to move it away…

That’s the problem, once you hit 30,000 pixels things start to get hazy. At least, that’s the limit that I’m familiar with in AE.
