  AE Startup Hangs – New Leopard Install (Cross Post)

  Here’s what I posted on the AE Basics forum (hoping someone here might have some insight):

  I have been running the CS3 Production Suite and AE v8.0.2 fine on my system when running Tiger, but after doing a Leopard upgrade, AE hangs on startup, specifically at the step “Scanning Folder: File Formats”.

  I have trashed prefs and even reinstalled the entire suite, and while every other app in the suite launches fine, I have never been able to get AE to startup since the OS upgrade; it always hangs in the same spot. I am running OS 10.5.2 as well as Quicktime v 7.4.5.

  Any thoughts? TIA

  you should qualify for free tech support from adobe… they will give support for install issues, which is what this sounds like.

  things you could try:

  1. use disk utility (applications>utilities) to repair permissions, and you might as well perform a disk check while you’re there. if that doesn’t help, continue…

  2. old quicktime components can often cause ae to crash at startup, move all the codecs/components from the library>quicktime folder and users>username>library>quicktime folder to a place like the desktop. then see if ae starts. if it does, then slowly reintroduce those components until you find the bad one. if needed, you’ll then to find and update for the bad one(s). if it doesn’t work, continue…

  3. try creating a new user account (apple>systems prefernces, then ‘accounts’ (under system)). logout and login in as the new user, then see if ae will load. i had a problem recently where i lost the ability to import p2 files. creating a new user was the only way to get it back…

  Thanks for the info. Tried everything you said, and still no luck. Called Adobe, and they recommended to try a fresh erase and install of Leopard, and two days later, AE works! Of course I was trying to avoid a complete re-install, but sometimes, especially in our business, it’s just good practice.
