  • Write on effect – Brush position

    Hi

I’m using after effects cs3 on a mac. When I paste the mask position onto the brush position in the write on effect the brush is in the wrong place, down to the right. It follows the right path but not in the right place. The layers are the same size as the comp, the pixel ratio’s are the same (thanks to a reply to my earlier post). Everything is as it should be but still I’m getting this irritating problem.

If anyone could help or point me in the direction of any other posts regarding this matter (I did search but couldn’t find any) I would be very grateful.

    Thanks

    Jono

[Jono Lewarne] “The layers are the same size as the comp”

Do they have the same pixel dimensions? They need to be the same size at the same scale or it won’t work. The mask’s position is based on pixel values so the pixel dimensions of the layer is what is important and not necessarily the size of the layer. Even though the ‘size’ can be changed with the ‘scale’ property, this is not changing the dimensions.

Personally I’m not a fan of this technique because there are so many X factors. Will the Stroke effect (which uses the mask directly as input) not work for you?

I’m not sure if the pixel dimensions are the same size, how do I check this? I’m inputing layers from photoshop so is it something I need to do in there or in AE?

I’m basically trying to get handwriting to appear as if its being written. I did a rough draft to show last week and it worked fine with the write on effect. Would the stroke effect be able to do that?

    Thanks

    Thanks Darby!

The stroke effect has worked like a charm. So much easier than the write on effect with the exact same results.

    Cheers!

Select the footage in your project window and take note of the dimensions in the info section at the top of the project window. If the dimensions are different you can change them in PS or you can pre-comp the two footage items into two different comps of the same dimensions.

Yes, stroke can do that. Actually, I’ve had the best luck using Vector Paint to reveal for text, you can get in there and really paint on the text. It also allows you to vary the width of the brush along the course of the stroke (if you have a tablet), which is nice.

You are an absolute legend, I was having the same problem as Jono Lewarne but the ‘Stroke’ effect perfectly!

    Thank you very much!
