Ok, so partly, this is my mistake. I started a project in AE. My first solution to get the results I wanted required an insanely large composition. I scrapped that idea, and started working with a solution that would only require a standard NTSC DV sized comp….

but, since this was a fairly simple and quick project, i wasn’t thinking, working too quick, and did my whole project in the huge comp, but it’s still technically the same size ratio, so i never noticed.

so now, it’s insanely huge, and didn’t realize it until i rendered it out (took 3 hours for 17 seconds). i precomped that, and put it in an NTSC DV comp, tried to render out, but it’s still taking 3+ hours to render 17 seconds. i’m using photo-jpeg compression. i want it to look as good as possible. i’ve let one render out, but it will not play (very jerky, can’t scrub or play it). any ideas?

    quick question,

Are you using large images in your comp or are the majority of your elements generated in afx. This can make a difference. If you have large pictures, ie an 8 megapixel photo, try to resize it in another program to a size which will be used in the comp. For example, you dont need a 4000×3000 image in a ntsc dv composition unless you are zooming way in. This might be the problem.

Let me know what types of elements you have in your comp and also how big your original comp was

yes, my bg image is probably 8 mega pixels, maybe higher. i have a bunch of cloud elements placed throughout the comp that are displacing and rotating slightly, but i still don’t see how 17 seconds is taking 3 hours to render. i’ve rendered out much more complex projects that were 4 times as long is half the time of this.

I’m using very few effects, but for the most part maybe large layers.

i’m still not understanding why when it’s done rendering it won’t play through.

I had the same problem with my project, but the resolution I’m using is 2880 x 810 and I had to use the highest quality image as possible since the video would be projected onto a big building, and I had over 450 layers of video. Anyway, it took ages to render less than a minute video and the avi file is HUGE! When I played the avi it was really jerky as well.

I brought the footage into Windows Media Encoder and it got rid of the problem, it played beautifully. However, it depends on what you want the final file format to be. I hope this could help you a little.

    Good luck.

Whoops… sorry, I didn’t mean 450 layers of video, I meant 450 layers of moving image. Big difference there :p
