I have been playing around with shatter for a couple of weeks. I am trying to use a gray scale graphic to control how my (target) image shatters.

In this case the image that is being shattered is the same image to control the shatter.

What I did was use an image that had gray boxes going from right to left. Then in the “Shape” twirl down section I set the pattern to custom and then custom shape was set to my gray boxes going from right to left. In the Gradient section I also picked my graphic of the boxes going right to left. Then I set the shatter percent to change over time from 0 percent to 100 percent.

When I did this, the boxes did not break apart one value at a time. However, when I set the pattern to one of the built-in patterns that come with shatter, let’s say, bricks, the image shatters as expected. That is, it shattered based on the gray values from light to dark. I get the feeling that some other value is at play here.

Just recently I read somewhere (I can’t remember where. It might have even been here at Cow.) that color may play a part.

Can anyone give me direction? Articles, tutorials, your own experiences, etc.

    Thanks
    David

shatter can use Red Green Blue Cyan Magenta Yellow Black and White colors to create different shapes.

(thanks to Marcus Geduld showing me that one at NAB–along with a ton of other cool tricks)

[Matt Larson] “shatter can use Red Green Blue Cyan Magenta Yellow Black and White colors to create different shapes.”

Yes this works! What the initial Q needs to do is to create a custom map using the colors stated above – grayscale won’t do.
