AJA or Decklink?
Good morning everyone! I am looking into purchasing a card for my computer (G5 but hopefully a MacPro soon) and I am looking for recommendations between the two, pro vs. cons, etc. Another feature I am curious about is if I can use either to turn my 42″ plasma into a fully functioning monitor. Forgive me if this is a silly question, but someone mentioned that to appropriately use the 42″ as a monitor I would need a certain card to do so. In my mind “penny pinching” mind I was wondering if either the AJA or Decklink would allow me to do that as well. Thanks in advance!

Do some research at the sites. I’ve used both, and the only con looks like that the AJA’s don’t support dual boot. Thats why I steer towards black magic. However, a lot of core guys I know say AJA AJA AJA, and no no no to Black Magic.
If you’re booting windows, go Black Magic. If you aren’t, go AJA.
You can probably use the monitor, you may need a DVI converter for the card. They aren’t that pricey. However, after the cost of that, you might be better off just buying a true HD monitor…

Decklinks are great cards and seem to offer more for the money. But like all competing products out there, some people would disagree with me on that. I use a Blackmagic Extreme HD and, while I had a few minor issues once that a software update fixed, it’s been very reliable and seamless.

Either way check that your G5 has the same PCIe slots as the MacPro you are planning to get or you will need to get a new card again.
