We put a camera mount on the front of a car and drove down the middle of the street with the camera facing forwards. The camera is focused on the yellow lines in the middle of the road but there are occasional breaks in the lines when we cross intersections and things like that. There is a slight but noticeable shake in the camera and we want to stabilize it as best as we can. Any suggestions? There isn’t anything around the perimeter of the shot so my stabilizing techniques are kind of out the door on this one. Please please help.

Obviously, we are using After Effects.

No there isn’t a stationary object in the shot. The camera is looking down at the lines in the road. Is there any other way to stabilize a shot like this? The yellow lines are consistently different than the surrounding pavement. Am I screwed? Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

If you have Final Cut 6 or Shake, you can use the Smoothcam filter. I’d stay away from the Stabilize filter in Shake because, like in AE, you have to set tracking points. The Smoothcam filter compares each frame to the previous frame and makes adjustments based on that to stabilize the footage. The down side in that your footage will have to be enlarged after the Smoothcam to take away the black space that’s generated by moving frames up and down, left and right, to make the image stable. In FCP’s Smoothcam it’s done automatically. In Shake you have to do it manually after the filtering.

Thanks guys. I will try the smooth-cam filter today and let you know the results. I am a big fan of Andrew Kramer too and use his DVDs very frequently. Appreciate your time.
