  • Making 4×3 Footage Fit in 16×9 Timeline

I have a project that was edited in FCP7 in this format:

720×480, NTSC DV (3:2), with pixel aspect ratio NTSC – CCIR 601 DV (720×480).
I’m guessing this means a 4:3 video with non-square pixels.

Anyway, I want to put the video in a 1080i timeline. I thought the easiest way would be to make a 1080i timeline and drag the 720×480 sequence in the 1080i sequence. It looks perfect in the program, but when I export it it’s all squished. It’s filling the entire 16:9 frame. In FCP it shows black bars on the sides, which is what I want. Why doesn’t FCP export it how it looks in the timeline? And how can I export it how I want? Thanks.

Export with quicktime program not as current. You should be able to select the option you want and have it correct.

I think the problem is that the 720×480 sequence is using non-square pixels, and when I put that sequence in a 1920×1080 sequence, it thinks the pixels are square. I tried it again using a different pixel aspect ratio and this time there were black bars on the sides but it was still stretched too much. Then I did I exported it again the same way as the first time and for some reason it works now. Now idea why. I’ll just chalk it up to FCP 7 being buggy on Yosemite. 🙂

FCP’s scaling is not the best.
you would best off exporting your NTSC sequence,
and then working with that export to up-scale it to your new format.
