Issue with pixelated GoPro footage AFTER conversion to PreRes
Hi all,
So I did the standard conversion of 1920×1080 30p GoPro hero 5 footage to ProRes 422 LT and unscaled so that it would come in fine. After conversion when viewing the clip through Quiktime or Preview it seems to have retained the quality just fine. When I open up a project and set my audio video sequence preset settings to 1920×1080 ProRes 422 LT and pull a clip in it has heavy pixelation. See linked screenshots for Audio/Video Settings, Sequence settings, and then a screenshot of the pixelation in question. It looks like it’s skewing the size somehow or interlacing progressive footage. Definitely something in FCP because the 422 stuff looks fine outside of it. Thanks for the help everyone!
UPDATE: I exported it to Quicktime and it seemed to go back to it’s original quality….however….anytime I try to convert it to anything that has always worked before (eg H264 for vimeo) it goes back to being crazy blurry. I even tried uploading it directly to Vimeo in it’s 1.3 GB good quality playing state and on vimeo there was no HD option and again…extremely nasty looking. Super confused how it can export uncompressed so great and then no matter what I do in compressor it goes crap.)

Your sequence is interlaced…your footage is not. Set FIELD DOMINANCE to NONE.

Went ahead and did that but it’s still looking very interlaced when I play it back in FCP. Also when I closed the project and tried importing the footage to a new sequence with field dominance to none it asked to match the footage and when it did it added the upper dominance back on. Possibly a messed up setting in MPEG Streamclip? Screenshot of settings attached.

Your conversion introduced interlacing. It says right there, FIELD DOMINANCE: UPPER FIELD FIRST. Should be none. Personally I wouldn’t use MPEG STREAMCLIP for this…use Compressor. it’ll keep it progressive without needing to change anything.
