which format to use
Hello,
I have to capture around 500 hours of Beta-SP, 1000 hours of Digital Beta and 800 hours of DVCAM. I want to keep the quality of each format, I’m using the Motu V4HD and FCP so any idea which format should I use?thanks alot

Hi Assi,
I would capture the BetaSP and DigiBeta as Prores or Prores HQ.
The DVCam, I would capture it by FireWire.

What is the difference between ProRes 422 and ProRes HQ?
I’ve been told that the DVCPro 576 25 is more than enough for the Beta SP and the Digital Beta, I don’t know why it didn’t convince me! I’ve read somewhere that ProRes 422 is better than DVC Pro50! Others say uncompressed 10-bit is the best! I’m really lost I have to convert a huge amount of hours and I don’t want to do the bad choice and have problems later.
Another issue, capturing from DVCAM to FCP by fireWire using the easy setup DV PAL I had a delay with the video! it is really very strange! Could somebody tell me why?

That’s not true.
Betacam is a compressed (?) formatif you convert it to DVCPro you will add compression.
BetacamDigital is 10b Compresssed. You should capture it as 10b if you don’t want to crunch it.[Assi Mouzannar] ” I’ve read somewhere that ProRes 422 is better than DVC Pro50!”

What you mean that the captured files have audio and video out of sync?

Yes, the Audio/Video of the captured files, are out of sync

Is a bit difficult to figure out the reason.
That happens very often with MiniDV tapes,
but shouldn’t happens with DVCam, where the audio is locked.
You could try to play the tapes from a different desk/camcorder.

DV50…also known as DVCPRO 50…is the same quality as Digibeta, but not the same file size as ProRes 422. Personally, I’d go that route.

Shane,
DigiBeta is 10b/422 (compressed) and should be captured with 10b Unc or Prores.
In the Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betacam) are very well resumed de specs of all the Betacam flavors.

Rafael, I tried another DVCam deck but still have the out of sync!!
As for the DigiBeta I couldn’t find in the settings the ProRes HQ 25fps Pal 720×576 . So what about the frame size and the frame rate? Can I adjust the frame dimension to have the full frame?
When I captured to ProRes HQ, I got a cropped image and when I captured to uncompressed 10b, I got a pillaboxed
Only the DVCpro50 kept the same frame size. Any guidance? -
You need your sequence to be: 720×576 Pal Pixels, 25fps, Upper-field First. Anamorphic or not, up to your footage. Set the compressor Pros HQ or Prores 422, and “Render in High Precision”.
You can open a DV Pal sequence and change field order and the codec & Render option.
