  Dpi and framze size for photo scans in FCP

  I have a project made up entirely of photos strung together with narration and music. It will end up on an SD DVD, playable of regular TV. I assume the FCP sequence should be 720×480 DV. For scans, what should be the sharpest possible dpi, 72 or 300? And what image size? 720×547 ??

  Anything over 72dpi for video is a waste.
  The DV codec is not the best for final.

  Make the images:

  72dpi
  RGB
  .png/.psd/.targa/.tiff – Don’t use .jpg for a bit of a quality bump.
  YMMV

  Size – depend if you are doing moves or not. If no moves on stills, size them a close to the sequence size as you can. If moves, make them about twice as big or so.

  Start with the DV sequence preset – it matched DVD size.
  When the edit is complete.
  Change the Sequence settings.
  Prores422
  Rerender all/full.
  Export using “Current Settings”
  Drop that file into compressor to create your dvd ready files.

  Thanks a lot. However, the exported Quicktime movie with 300 dpi scans looks sharper on my macbook screen than the one with 72 dpi scans. What am I missing?

  Resolution is irrelevant, it’s the pixel dimensions of your image – and your aspect ratio will decide that – is your project PAL? NTSC? 4×3? 16×9?

  My project is NTSC 4:3.

  For future, what about NYSC 16:9. WHat res and what frame size of photos?
