• Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy

  final cut pro or imovie

  Dear Creative Cow,

  Many thanks to date for your brilliant and informative site. I have a quick question. I would like to use the latest version of IMovies to edit our short. we will be editing with h264.MOV files and I am concerned that IMovies may degrade the files once rendered. Could you please advise. We do have Final cut pro but we are looking for a simple cut and snip method to the edit. This movie will be going for film out. Many Thanks in advance,

  Hi Darren,
  iMovie internally convert all the footage to an intermediate codec (AIC for HD and DV for SD footage).
  Those codecs will add more compression to your H264, so will degrade the picture.
  If you feel comfortable editing with iMovie, you should have a look to the new FCPX which seems to have many similarities with iMovie without the shortcoming of having to pass through an intermediate highly compressed codec.

  Thankyou very much for clearing that up. That could have been costly if we had of ran with imovie.
