I haven’t seen this before, and wonder if anyone has some advice on what I can do. I’ve been rotoscoping a person out of a shot using a few masks. It’s obviously been long and arduous detail work.

On my third mask, everything was going fine from frame to frame until I got to a point a little less than half-way through the shot. All of a sudden, the opaque part of the mask of one keyframe remained “stuck” at that point through all remaining keyframes despite the keframing done afterwards. To be clear, the mask I was animating continued to mask out the subject, but there remained a keyframe that was masked out without actually having a mask there.

Here is a still photo of what I mean:

I tried deleting the keyframe of the mask, but it’s still there. I’ve restarted too with no change. I’m not sure what else I can do to get rid of it. Any ideas?

Hi Dave, thanks for the response.

Here’s what I know. It’s not everything, but I have a call out to the photog to find out the shoot specifics (I was brought in later after things were shot and digitized).

I know the camera was the HVX-200, and although not confirmed, it looks like all the footage was shot in standard 29.97 (it doesn’t appear 24p or pa).

It was all digitized into Final Cut Pro 6.02 with the DV/NTSC codec at 29.97. The clips were exported to AE 6.5 using the Quicktime Export (self contained).

In AE, I dragged the clip on to the make comp button to create a sequence based on the settings of the clip. When I look at the comp settings here’s what I have:

    Preset: Custom
    720×480
    Pixel Aspect: non square (0.91:1)
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Resolution: Full

What’s interesting to me is that in FCP, my sequence is set to standard NTSC CCIR-601 DV pixel aspect ratio, but in AE it’s a custom aspect. Could this be the issue?

    Hello,
It’s a problem due to your frame rate (you are at 29.97fps, aren’t you?) . I think to reduce this problem, you must have a frame rate with an integer like 30fps…

That’s strange. I’ve never had this issue before when I’ve worked in 29.97. Anyway, I adjusted the frame rate (and the aspect just in case), but the issue is still there. Don’t tell me I have to redo the mask. It took HOURS. My hand is cramping up just thinking about it.
