  Formating Question between FCP and iDVD

  I’m editing footage from multiple cameras. I have a DSLR which gives me the 720i AVI and a little Canon Vixia HV40 shooting SD. I’m trying to edit with FCP 5 on a Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.

  I know if anyone from my old production company saw this, they’d be disappointed. But at this point, because I’m not at a place where my clients need custom DVD menus, I’m trying to export to iDVD instead of DVD Studio Pro.

  I’m trying to get a final quicktime that is 720 x 480 16:9. I have found ways of getting both footage to look right on the canvass from my timeline, but my problem comes when I try exporting the Quicktime from FCP. I have tried exporting with various settings, without any luck. So, sometimes, when I preview the file from finder, it looks right. But when I open it in iDVD or anything else, it gets letterboxed. Other times, it becomes squeezed.

  Here’s what you do:

  (What DSLR gives you 720i AVI by the way?)

  Convert AVI to mov.
  Edit in a sequence that is 720×480.
  When done editing change the codec of the sequence to ProRes.
  Render all/full.
  Export using “CURRENT SETTINGS”
  Take that file and drop it into compressor to create your mpeg files for dvd

  OR

  Import that file directly into iDVD and let it compress the mov files for you.

  FCP does not edit AVI’s.
