When I make a export -“save movie as a qt self-contained” and play the resulting file in a qt player I notice a loss of the richness of the color….if I open the same file in fcp on the same computer I get all of the color of the original from the timeline…..is there anyway to overcome this color degrading? is something wrong with my settings?

Check “Allow FC Color Compatibility” in the QT Preferences.

Just to add – there’s been no color damage – just QuickTime showing it to your correctly. If you brought it back to FCP or into Compressor – everything would be fine.
