    A very strange question, I know:
    I am editing footage of two different cameras together: SONY EX1 (Full HD mode) and from the DSLR Canon T3i.
    After Transcoding all the material to ProRes, I am surprised to see that the Canon material is 1920*1080, but the EX1 material 1440*1080.
    How come ? Both is HD Widescreen material. I never understood, what is the 1440*1080 anyway. How can it be the same proportion of Widescreen Canvas, when it has same height, but missing 480 pixels in Width?

    Help me to shed some light on this!

    You shot with the EX set to “SQ” instead of “HQ”.
    EX/SQ is plain HDV: 1440 x 1080 HD/Pixels. 25Mbps/LongGOP/MPEG-2/8b-420-YUV.
    That is not “Full raster HD”.

    The “Full Raster HD” mode is the “HQ” : 1920×1080 Square Pixels/ 35Mbps……

    1920×1080 HD video uses square pixels, with a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.0, while 1440×1080 “Anamorphic HD” uses rectangular pixels with a PAR of 1.333. Because the pixels are wider than they are tall, it still fills the 16:9 screen area, and simple math proves it, as 1440 x 1.333 = 1920.

    Whether working in a 1440×1080 or 1920×1080 Premiere Sequence, you can mix the two formats together, your choice of what mode you wish to edit in. Just try to match frame rate when shooting, for instance both 1080i 29.97, or both 1080p30.

    Thanx for a chrystal clear answer! And about Premiere- it’s the app I started on! And unfortunately might return to again after the FCP X disaster!!!

    You can drop that 1440 material right in the 1920 sequence and it’ll be fine.

    There are so many settings and buttons on today’s cams, it’s an easy mistake.

    I have imported footage into fcp. the original files are 1080/1920 but my fcp settings were 720/576.
    I have changed the frame size in system settings to 1080/1920 but the aspect ratio won’t change and now my footage doesn’t fit the screen????

    One is 4to3, the other 16to9 format.
    Only way is to letterbox it if it has to fit 4to3 ratio.

    Right-Click on the clip in the sequence and “remove Attributes” then check basic motion & distort.
