I’m pretty new to film post production so bare with me. I’ve started making short videos for the company I work for that we then upload to youtube. All we have at work is FCExpress 3.5 and they aren’t will to upgrade yet. My problem is when I export my video for web I can’t get the quality I want.

When I use Quicktime conversion H.264 the colors and contrast come out very bland. It’s like it just sucks the color right out.
If I use Quicktime conversion photo-jpeg the colors and contrast come out great, but then after youtube processes it it blows all the highlights out.

for example: here is the h.264 version of a video https://youtu.be/_AZMadieuhQ

and here is a photo jpeg version

and yes the place I work is kinda weird, but it’s a job.

Is the h.264 codec in FCE 3.5 just old and outdated? Will upgrading to FCE 4 help?

Does FCE 3.5 come with Compressor? If so, that’s what you should be using as you have much more control over the compression and it is a dedicated compression program.

If it doesn’t then either persuade them to get it, if that’s not an option, then talk to someone who has worked there previously and ask them what they did.
