  Exporting to YouTube

  I have a four minute video shot at 1920×1080 with ProRes 422. Whenever I export it’s either a grossly huge file, or the quality is shit. Any suggestions on what settings to use so that I can upload to youtube and get the “watch in HD” option?

  Use share option of fcp to encode and upload on youtube or use youtube sharing preset in compressor to encode clip and upload later manually.

  Export a self-contained quicktime with current settings then take it to compressor and use the YouTube preset.

  I don’t see a youtube preset. I created one based on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_634703&v=9vQM1rjY_ng but I don’t think I have a default youtube preset. Where would I find it?

  The only things under Web are:

  Download
  quicktime
  Streaming

  There’s no youtube anything under any of those categories. Could you type up the settings so I can make my own youtube preset?

  I usually do h.264 compressed from a refmovie, mono audio. If file size is a problem, I make it CIF size, which still looks pretty good if a viewer scales it up. For a true high def experience I guess you keep the frame size large.

  Here’s what I use, it gives me great results…

  Your wrapper will be a quicktime .MOV file. Under video, use h.264 codec, high quality, multi-pass, data rate at 7,000. Sample the audio at 48. Check your frame controls and make sure you keep 100% of the original.

  Are those the settings you use to export directly from final cut pro? Or are those the compressor settings you use to compress the full quality quicktime movie you exported from final cut pro? If so, how do you create the full quality quicktime file from final cut pro? Using “export to quicktime movie”, “quicktime conversion”, or do you go directly to compressor?

  P.S. What’s a wrapper?

  I export from Final Cut a full quality self-contained MOV with the sequence settings. Hitting command E and clicking save will do this for you. Make sure Self-contained is checked.

  You wrapper is the file extension. In this case, mov is the file format (wrapper) of the video you will compress. Use the settings I listed earlier and you should have a good results for YouTube.

  It was weird though… Compressor froze up a few times trying to encode it. Oh well. Worked eventually.
