How do I determine the resolution of a video clip?
Posted by Zeno Pierre on April 20, 2011 at 8:04 pmI know this is a dumb question, but I’ve been fighting with this for some time now. I created a video at a size that says 720×480.
Is 720×480 considered the resolution?

April 20, 2011 at 8:11 pmYes. 720 x480 is the amount of lines of resolution you have in that box. That resolution is also known as Standard Definition, SD, or 4×3.

April 22, 2011 at 8:29 pmYes, but keep in mind that the actual pixels aren’t square. On a computer, it’d be closer to 640×480
I can hear you go ‘Wha????”
Remember legos? Well, video uses legos that aren’t square – they’re a bit tall. If you had 720 (the width) skinny legos next to 720 wider legos, you’d still have 720 wide – but the wider ones would be measured longer. In other words, the dots aren’t square, but are skinny and tall.
FCP and every other editorial tool accounts for this – and in HD everything is square and matches the size you see on a computer (mostly.)
