2 Technical Issues with Final Cut Pro 7
All right, this is my first time ever using Final Cut Pro so I’d appreciate if you excuse my lack of knowledge regarding its workings. 🙂
I’m filming a video on my Fuji Finepix S2000HD. I uploaded the files and started editing, but as I played the video back, there was a really annoying beeping sound and I couldn’t hear any audio from my video. I googled my problem and people said things like, “render the audio” so I typed that into the help search bar and rendered the audio. Now I can hear everything very well, but my video flashes bright red..as if some, actually a lot of, my frames were replaced with a big red box.
My question for that is what do I do? 🙁 I tried rendering the video but it just didn’t work. I saved before I did any rendering at all, so I’m not going to save again and hopefully it will be just back to the beeping audio..I’d much rather have no sound than no video, ha! But I would like some sound too. I’d really appreciate help!
Next, while I was googling that up, I saw someone say that rendering MPEGs is a no no. I looked at what type of file my videos were and yup, they’re all MPEGs. :/
Should I convert them to something else? And if I should, what do I convert them to and how? Hopefully there’s a no-cost option out there..because I’m broke, but I’ll take whatever advice you have! 🙂

You need to convert your files to a proper editing format before brining them into FCP to edit.

Little update: my film stopped doing the red flashing thing. I just stopped messing with it for a bit and it stopped on its own…but I’d still like to know about it and what I should do if it happens again.

Use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to batch-convert your footage into ProRess and edit it.

Basically, FCP was never meant to handle distribution codecs, like mp4, mpg2 files; camera manufacturers have shoehorned these into cameras because the files are small (enough).
You’ll need to transcode either via Compressor or MPEGStreamclip to ProRes (either ProRes LT or ProRes 422). These will make the files significantly larger, but they’ll work perfectly in FCP.

Jeff, I’ve been using FCP6 and FCP7 for a few years now, and I always transcode to APR422. I’ve just started getting this flashing red screen problem on some clips, even after they’re transcoded. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I’m confused – are you saying ‘me too’? Or are you Jessie?
If I was getting that with prores, I’d be likely to believe that a corrupt pref, ram or video driver was the cause.

Hi, Jeff. I’m saying, “Me, too.”
I’m using videos recorded by a small web cam that I have installed in kiosks here in Miami for my master’s degree capstone project. I’ve never seen this until trying to edit these files, and even now it’s *very* intermittent and unpredictable.
I’ve attached a screen shot of the Get Info window for the current troublesome clip.

I’m willing to bet that apple never intended prores to be used like this. I might suggest a different codec – even uncompressed, because at 320×240, there’s not significant size/data demands on the system.
