Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy keyframe issue

I just upgraded to FCS3 from FCS2 and I don;t seem to be able to ease keyframes anymore. I use to just right click them in the viewer and select ease, but I’m not getting that option anymore. Any ideas?

You can still do that. Just right-click the keyframe and choose ‘smooth’.

OK, thanks. I meant “smooth” … just used the wrong term since I had After Effects on the brain. I’ve tried everything and it’s just not working in my FC for some reason. When I right click a keyframe, the only option I get is “clear”. Is there another way I can smooth keyframes so I can get through this edit until I have time to figure out what’s going on? Any ideas? Already restarted, trashed prefs, etc.

What attribute are you trying to smooth? How many keyframes do you have on that attribute?

Center point (position) with 2-3 KFs.

Aha! You can’t smooth center point keyframes in the viewer, but if you have wireframe overlays turned on in your canvas, you should see a motion path for your media with green points representing the keyframes. Here, you can right-click and choose ease in/ease out.

Thank you very much, John. I could’ve sworn I had smoothed position keyframes in the viewer before since I’ve rarely used the wireframe view. I right clicked and chose ease in/out on each of the 3 keyframes, but now the movement is erratic and all over the place … instead of just smoothing out the movement between the positions I had already set, the object is in completely different positions.

Well, you’ll have to play with the handles of each point, just like you would when making a path in Illustrator or Photoshop. Make the handles longer, and you’ll slow down the speed around that point, make them shorter and you’ll speed it up. The spacing of the small dots between the green points will show you the speed.

Unfortunately, I have not had much success smoothing motion paths in FCP – I get the same erratic behavior you are seeing now. I really prefer to leave FCP to simple editing and do any other motion in a program made for it, like Motion or After Effects. It is possible in FCP, though, just harder.

    Thanks again.

I normally do everything other than cuts only elsewhere for this exact reason, but I just needed what I thought would/should be a very simple move of a composited logo to match a camera move. I understand what you mean about adjusting speed, etc., but that’s not the issue … as soon as I apply ease, the positions all change … it’s completely changing the positions I had already painstakingly and precisely set instead of just easing in and out of them.
