Imported media did not show up at canvas
Hi there,
I’m new to FCP, just installed FC Studio 3 to my iMac. I opened FCP, imported some clips from my iMovie and Photo Booth. When trying to overwrite clips from Viewer to Timeline, a little box popped up asking,
“Attention: This clip does not match this sequence’s settings or any of your sequence presets.
For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing.
Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?”
Since I started FCP from a clean slate, I never set or preset any settings for any sequence or anything a all. But I clicked on “yes” for this question.
After putting together a few clips, I tried to play the Timeline, but I didn’t see anything at all at Canvas. It’s totally black. Sound-wise, I either heard nothing at all or some funny beeps that are nothing to do with the real sound from the clips.
I didn’t know what’s going on, so I decided to download Apple’s sample media from FCP Help menu. After that, I imported these sample media to FCP, and did the editing like the first time in a new sequence, but still saw nothing at Canvas when playing Timeline. I could hear sound, however, this time, but still no video playing at Canvas.
Can anyone help me figure out how to solve this problem, please? Thank you.

Final Cut is optimized to work with some very precise settings – it just can’t handle ‘any’ video that’s thrown at it.
The general rule was: Match your Camera’s video type to the Sequence. When there was a mismatch, in the old days, you’d have to render.
Since then, FCP has improved, but it still works best when you have your video and sequence settings match. FCP out of the box, has it’s ‘easy setup’ for DV.
If the first clip that hit the timeline isn’t DV, FCP gives you the option to:
- Fix the sequence (pressing yes at that box)
- Adjust the clip to work in the current sequence (pressing no at that dialog box)

This only happens for the first clip. After the first clip is on the timeline, FCP assumes that ALL THE CLIPS will be that format and does whatever magic necessary to let other formats work.
Last, and most relevant to your issue: when you get the warning “Attention: This clip does not match this sequence’s settings or any of your sequence presets”, FCP is saying – “hey, this new video? It doesn’t match anything AT ALL that I’m optimized to work with.” Common formats are things like h.264 from an iPhone or Flip camera.

So if I open a new project, will Timeline continue to use “that format” as its key format and work from there? Or does it start all over and work with the format of the “new first clip” in the new project? Thank you.

You essentially have it, yes.
Final Cut creates sequences based on the Easy Setup (Final Cut Pro Menu>Easy setup.)
If the first clip hits the timeline and doesn’t match, it asks you to either change the timeline or ‘make’ the clip work. It will ask you this only for the first clip; after that, it assumes you made your decisions.
If you create another sequence – it’ll do this again.Best,

Just to make sure we’re on the same page. If I create a new sequence, fcp will determine the clip format based on the first clip of each new sequence, instead of the very first clip of the very first sequence, correct. Thank you again.

It checks for a match of the first clip of EACH sequence.
