Simple Raid for new Mac Pro system – what do I need and what do I do?
Hi,
I’ve done some searching here as well as on the net, and am not finding any easy instructions, etc to my questions about a raid.Just purchased a Mac pro 8-core, 8gb ram, etc with a 1tb internal drive and I purchased a 2nd 1tb drive which is not installed (sitting in the box). My video work is for our church, and while yes, that’s important of course to us, I’m not operating on the high-end of the profession for big fees.
I’ve heard about raid 0 (for speed?) and raid 1 (for redundancy/backup?) and the latter is my concern – having a backup. I’m just not sure what to do with my internal drive (wisest use) and this extra drive I have. I’ll be importing footage from a Canon 7D and an XH-A1.
Any chance someone could walk me through it? Such as keep the extra 1tb drive or return it for a different setup? I’m spending the rest of my money on gear and before it’s all gone, would like to find out if I need to address this.

You really could use ONE more drive.
Keep the OS drive as it is. Do not put media on this drive. You could put all your proj. files on this drive for sure.
The other 1TB drive you could raid with a third drive. (it never ends)This is a simple process thru the OS:
This will not give you redundancy. It will give you speed and storage.
You could then buy Ext. FW Drives to back up your media/files onto. That way you have a backup…until they fill up and they will.

That sounds simple and what I needed to start out with at my level. We can always grow into a more robust workflow hardware-wise.

You don’t need a 1tb system drive, that’s a total waste of space. The largest system drive you’ll ever need is just 300gb. So, save your dough, buy a much smaller drive for your system drive and use the two 1tb drives as media drives. You’ll need to clone your existing system drive to the new smaller drive using Carbin Copy Cloner, which is easy as pie.

David, How the heck is a 1TB drive a “total waste of space“?
We go thru TB’s like they’re MB around here.Several hours of Church Seminars a week will fill er up.
Buying 300MB drives is a total waste of money and time.

Go back and read what I wrote… I think you misunderstood. I said, a 1Tb “system drive” is a total waste.
The system drive should hold only the OS and applications. Mine has the OS, FCS with all of the extra media, and the entire Adobe Collection, and all that is just 121Gb.
Does that 121Gb require a 1Tb drive? Would putting that 121Gb be an efficient use of space and finances? Would I waste a good potential 1Tb media drive for that? And finally, would I recommend that FCP Cows use a 1Tb drive as a system drive?
No. No. No. No. And finally, No.
In fact, we agree Chris, and let me just add that I would advise striping the two 1Tb drives together as RAID 0. The performance and space combined would be a terrific benefit. However, backup of the 2Tb virtual drive would add additional expense.
