  can I record anamorphic 16:9 on a miniDV using my portable SONY deck?

  I have a 10-year-old SONY portable miniDV deck,I believe the model is “Something-300”, it is not with me now. Its one of those plastic ones, this one doesn’t have an external LCD screen. It records DV and plays DVCAM and DV (all on miniDV tapes, only).

  My question is: I want to master a 16:9 short film, for film festivals. I edited it in 16:9 (anamorphic DV) and now I sak, Can I master anamorphic using the deck? I don’t believe so, BUT perhaps I am wrong? Can miniDV / DVCAM decks de-anamorphize stuff mastered this way, stretched vertically?

  Or should I play safe and add letterbox to the 4:3 screen?

  Hi Alan,
  You don’t have to worry. The desk doesn’t needs to know if the movie is 4×3 or 16×9.
  The desk just need a DV stream 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL).
  Edit your stuff in a DV Anamorphic sequence and print to tape.

  But when I print to tape and monitor via a tube-TV (4:3), what should I be seeing? A stretched image or an image with letterbox? IS this just a matter of setting the print to tape viewing experience?

  And more importantly, will the festival’s deck on the other end know what to do with the signal, and de-anamorphize it for a true 16:9 screening?

  If the TV is only 4×3, you will see the picture stretched.
  On a monitor with Anamorphic option, you will see it letter-boxed.

  Displaying 4×3 or 16×9 will be set on the monitor/TV/Projector.
  Only very old devices have no Anamorphic option.

  All NTSC is 720×480 (DV) or 486(Full 601).

  The only difference is the playback mechanism. Some TVs/Broadcast monitors have a 16×9 switch, and some don’t.

  If you’re going to play back your footage on a 4×3 tv, you’ll have to nest your 16×9 sequence into a 4×3 sequence so the 4×3 tv handles this correctly.
