Dual Layer Disc Stalling
Had some issues this week with FCP and Compressor and got them sorted out. My project is a bit large and decided to compress for SD DVD in Compressor and send it to DVD Studio Pro. All went good especially since it’s my first one. It has a main menu and a chapter menu, all work fine and simulated, it works fine. I burned my first DL and it had some mistakes that I went back and figured out. It’s 2 hours 34 minutes. I had a chapter marker that fell on 1 hour 27 minutes and it starts with some stills, first layer needing to be 50% plus and I figure I have menus to add to that as well that this might be a good spot for the layer break. It stalls at the marker. If I go back to the menu and try to continue by clicking on that chapter, it immediately takes me to the next chapter. The first go around, I had it set to automatic and pretty much the same result as this. I went back in to view my markers to see if I had a naming issue, but all seems fine. Is there something that I can do about the stall and the chapter skip? I can see the layer break dimple on top of that marker. I have FCP7, Compressor 3.5 and DVDSP 4. The project compressed to 6.9 GB, M2v & ac3. Other than some motion issues, the rest of the disc works really well. Anyone run into this one??

I think this (may) be one of two things. Either your compression is set too high (don’t go above 7mb/s if you’re using uncompressed audio, 8 if you’re using AC3), or possible the video is in the wrong VOB for the split.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the help. I compressed using Compressor 5.7 average and 7.5 upper, M2v and ac3, But the first 90 minutes plays fine. I think this has something to do with the layer break as it’s specifically at that spot when the problem begins. What do you mean when you say ” the video is in the wrong VOB for the split”?

I have looked on the net for this answer with some specificity. I’m looking where to place the break point on this Dual Layer. Michael Sacci had an excellent reply to a similar problem on a older thread, but I need clarification. Here’s where I’m unclear. I simply looked at my timeline and calculated about where the split should be considering it’s 6.9 GB and 2 hours, 34 minutes. I see from others having this problem that it might be I’m supposed to find the break point by adding data in the video TS file starting from the top and add downward until I reach that just over halfway point. I have found that vob file with the correct gigs but am unclear what to do with that info. I’ve littered my timeline with additional markers multiple times and did a build and then a format/build to find nothing but the word automatic in the drop down. I am assuming I am to look for the non-grayed out markers in the drop down box on the build/format drop down box. If I click on the disc icon in the outline view and go to the inspector and look for the same info there, I get “automatic” and the name of my disc, when I click on the name of my disc, just about every marker I have shows up there. Can someone enlighten me on these gray areas?

It’s been awhile since I dealt with a problem like this – so please forgive my aging brain. The last time I dealt with it (out of frustration) we dropped in 4 dozen markers ‘near’ where we guessed the point would be and let automatic happen.
First, I see you’ve dropped in extra markers…
Under Format a Disc, where it says break point – do you have any valid markers? Valid ones will be black/invalid in gray.Second, on the outline view, there’s a VTS switch in the upper right corner – I’m curious where your track is…VTS1? 2?

Under the “format” drop down box, only “automatic” appears. If I go to outline, click on the disc, go to inpector to check disc volume, I get automatic, the name of my disc, and upon clicking on the disc, all of my chapter markers show up. Am I checking the disc volume on the format/build drop down for the valid marker?
I have also discovered that you can put up to 85 chapter markers in DVD Studio Pro before it asks you to please don’t do that anymore.
I’m not at the office now, but will check the outline view for the VTS switch. What exactly will that tell me?

I actually fired up DVDSP for the first time in awhile.
When you get to your machine – you should be able to get access to what the break point allowable markers are under the Disc/Volume tab of the Inspector (for the disc)
You might want to move the movie into VTS 1 – the VTS switch allows you to move content from one VTS to another; there are times when programming and speed of loading can be improved by moving menus into a single VTS. Last, when you have a possibly corrupt MPEG2, by moving elements into different VTS you can identify what may be causing the problem.
Does the DVD work as a Video_TS folder from your HD (Where the break point is irrelavant?)
Ok, so, when we’re frustrated at the back and forth…here’s my brute force solutions.
Split the movie in two parts, 90 min and the remaining 64. Then I’d have the end of the first track point at the second – which should make DVDSP have an easier time figuring out where the break point should be.
More brute force: create a second pair of compressions – one that fits a single layer and a second that redoes the main compressed video a little smaller, just to see what happens.Best,

One word. Success! The COW was working for me the past few days. Just in case anyone followed this thread, here’s what worked. Jeff’s multiple suggestions probably all work, but this one sounded like it made the most sense for me….worked like a charm. Split the tracks where you would best guess the halfway plus mark would be. Point the end jump from the first track to the beginning of the second and drop your break point on it’s head. This particular break(movie chapter) started with a few stills…….you can hardly see the break happen. It’s as smooth as they make em. Tried it in a few different DVD players I have in the house over and over with no issue. Until this method, I couldn’t get a break point to show up in the format, disc volume, drop down for 2 days and a hundred tries. This worked first time. Jeff is my new best friend. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
