Despite reading the manual for both FCP and the camera, I am having no success finding the correct set up allowing me to digitize from the tape in a Sony HVR-Z7U into FCP 6.06.

I recorded using the HDV 1080i 30p setting on the advice of the camera’s owner. (Could be my first mistake).

But FCP tells me it is unable to initialize b/c the device isn’t connected or the capture preset is not correct, etc.

I’m using Easy Set-Up. The instructions say “(2) From the Format pop-up window, choose a format the matches the footage you want to work with…. ” Does this mean the format I wish to EDIT with – or the format I’ve been working with (recording) in the camera?

Assuming it’s the stuff in the camera, I’ve tried both HD and HDV in the Format pop-up window, and every conceivable possibility in the Use window just below that in Easy Set-Up.

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Make sure the camera is set to output HDV and is not set to automatic and make sure iLink is switched off. 1080i60 should be the correct setting with the Sony HDV device control preset.

    All the best,

From wha I can tell camera is set to component 1080i/480i. Other choices are down convert squeeze and dv wide convert / letter box.

Set it to 1080i and go through the menus and make sure iLink is off.

Have done all of that, to no avail.
Not sure what else to try at this point.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything’s connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you’re using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.

    All the best,

    Tom
