  • HDV To SD DVD, Field Dominance?

Posted by Jon Downs on July 27, 2010 at 1:04 pm

(i found a few posts about this topic, but didn’t really find an answer…there seems to be lots of conflicting info out there. so i’m hoping someone can provide me with some solid information).

    my workflow:
i edit HDV (1080i) in a ProRes sequence. when i’m done, and i need to downsample to SD for DVD, i output the sequence using “Quicktime Conversion” to an anamorphic SD Quicktime file (ProRes), and then use Compressor for MPEG encoding.

    my question:
should i change the field dominance to “bottom” when i create the SD ProRes Quicktime file? i know field dominance should be consistent, but of course HDV is “upper” and an SD DVD should be “lower”, correct?

    any help is appreciated!

Output from your timeline “current settings” making a ref file.
    Bring that into compressor.
Choose DVD, alter data rate for best quality.
    Leave Fields to upper.
    Make mpeg.

    Rule of Thumb –
Alway keep the field dominance the same through the entire workflow if going to DVD.

If using Compressor set it yourself, don’t use auto.
