I’m trying to put together a doco short. Unfortunately, the resolution of the required stock footage came at 720 x 480 DV. But the footage of the talking heads I’ve shot is at HDV1080i/50. What would be the best way to try and match them up without losing any quality? Is Compressor the best tool to try and convert the DV footage to HDV? Can it be done at all?

Any advice would be much appreciated….

There is no way to upconvert DV to HD without losing quality. It will get softer than what you have. Do a hardware upconvert gives a better results. Using Frame Control in Compressor helps or using a plugin like InstantHD. But there is no free lunch here. DV footage will never match HD footage, unless the HD is shoot very poorly, then you may have a chance.

First off DO NOT edit in a HDV time line. Use pro res! Better yet capture your HDV material as pro res.

    Then follow Michael’s advice.

    THANKS FOR THAT ADVICE ZANE!

If I’m capturing the HDV material as pro res, does it increase the quality or maintain the integrity of the footage a lot better than if captured in HDV? and/or does it make editing in a pro res timeline easier, producing a better final output?

Is there any way to convert material captured in HDV to Pro Res?

Your help here would be really appreciated!

    Pat
