  • Newbie question: Using External Hard Drive

Hi and thanks in advance for any help. I’m new to digital editing and started my project by opening all my interview files on my internal hard drive and of course used most my memory in doing so. I’m thinking that was a mistake.

I’ve purchased 2 external hard drives where I have all my media stored (drag and dropped the PRIVATE folder to copy then created a folder with my interviewee name and drop the PRIVATE file in there). My guess is that I should be opening my files on the external hard drive through log and transfer. Is there a simple tutorial, thread, or advice that gives me the ABC’s of how to set up a project using an external hard drive w/FCP 7? I have a feeling this is probably pretty easy to do but I’m not too tech savy at this point. I’ve got a ton of interview footage that I need to organize for an independent project.

    Thanks!

If the video is already on your external HD then you should only have to import them from your external HD, log and capture shouldn’t be needed. If you are going to edit on another computer, make sure to put your media volume on the external HD too.

Delete the files off your internal drive after you have copied the files to the external drive(s)

Set your scratch drive to the external.

Reconnect media from w/in the project.
