newbie can’t seem to burn DVD
Hi, thanks for reading. I have a sequence with a lot of still photos that I am doing sort of a montage…my problem is I can’t burn a DVD that will play in my dvd player for my television. I have went through every step…I have about four different books that tell me to do all the same things..but all i get when i try to play the dvd is “Disc Error” my computer is a 2009 Mac Pro snow leopard 10.6.1 final cut pro 7 toast titanium 10..all the latest and greatest..yet I can’t make a simple DVD..does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong…?? my dvd player for my tv is only two years old also and it works fine on commercial dvds. Click on the icon for your footage, do the “get info” menu choice to get a display of the technical stats for the file, use the free apple grab tool to take a snapshot of your settings there, and post the info here.

Shane’s Stock Answer #42 – David Roth Weiss’ Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the “general tab” in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select “16:9 pan-scan.”
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

The method John mentions above is my “down and dirty” method, and it will work, though it it is not the best in terms of quality.
The best method entails the use of Apple Compressor to encode and Apple DVDSP to author and burn the DVD. We can teach you that method, which is how professionals create DVDs, however, I’m really curious Mark, where the heck did you read that using Toast to create DVDs on Macs with Final Cut Studio installed was the proper method?

OK..I did EXACTLY as you said…no luck, as a matter fact it actually froze up my dvd player and I had to turn it off and back on to get the disc out..!! Soo, back to the drawing board…is it because my DVD is only 1 minute 45 seconds long…?? I know I’m grasping at straws here but it simply can’t be that frigging complcated to make a disc

David…I read it in a book called”adobe CS Production Premium for Final Cut studio Editors” he was actually refering to Toast to make Blu-Ray dics because apparently FCP cannot make Blu Ray…or apple doesn’t recognize Blu Ray…so I thought I would give toast a try..no luck though..just a waste of 79 dollars…lol Mark. I tried the method previously supplied but still no luck. I can’t believe this is so tough…..I know my home DVD player works fine…so I don’t know what I am missing, I’m sure it is something easy…I just can’t find it. I have 2 DVD burners in my mac so I know that can’t be iit…?? very frustrating indeed Mark

Is it possibly because I am using DVD+R Instead of DVD-R ??? maybe my DVD player doesn’t recognize +R….?? comments…??

Doubtful!
Here’s the proper way to create a DVD using the tools in Final Cut Studio.
1) Export a self contained Quicktime file using Export>>Quicktime Movie using current settings. This makes a perfect copy of you timeline.
2) Import that file into Compressor, and choose the proper “Best Quality” DVD preset closest to your length video. (90-mins. in the shortest). Drag and drop the entire folder as this will add both a video and audio encoder preset and it will create a video .M2t file and and audio .ac3 file.
3. Open DVDSP, select the “graphical” tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
4. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
5. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option “first play”.
6. Now drag your .m2t and .ac3 files from the Finder and drop it on top of the green monitor.
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.

I’d suggest one addition to David’s excellent workflow. In the Dolby Digital (ac3) preset make the following changes:
1) In Compressor’s Inspector look in the Audio tab for Dialog Normalization and change it from -27 to -31.
2) In the Inspector’s Preprocessing tab change the Compression Preset from Film Standard Compression to None.

OK…success at last..!! The problem was my dvd player didn’t recognize DVD+R it works fine with DVD-R I knew it had to be something easy and although I put the “NEW” in newbie I did figure it out myself so I at least deserve a little credit…!! (now all I have to do is figure out how to size my tiffs in PS4 to fit my 16×9 tv) anyway, thanks for all the help..I did learn about 15 ways to burn a dvd now, so I guess that’s a good thing. Mark
