graphic line overlay
Hi, I’d like a bit of advice re the best way to draw lines over video. I want to illustrate the trajectory of a golf ball so need to draw straight and curved lines over various video clips of golfers hitting their shots. Many thanks

I think I would export a still into photoshop, play with the bezier drawing tools till I liked the results, export out just the drawing with an alpha channel in targa, png or psd format, done.

Hi, apologies Mark, should have said I want to try and animate the line in real time albeit in slo mo to follow the golf ball track.

Then add a step to Mark’s solution: Mask or crop the line image that was made in PS, then animate the mask.

I just did this for a quick animation of some bar graphs, it was as easy as stacking two versions of the chart; one with the x and y axis on it, the other of just the bars. keyframing the crop of the bars was dirt-simple and client loved the look. This will work for a curve as well, as long as the path doesn’t loop back on over itself. Unless your slice is as bad as mine, not likely to be a problem:-)
Apple Motion also comes with pre-animated arrows in the “content” section, which you can somewhat modify. But I think the Photoshop method is just as good.
