Just wondering if anyone has experience with the Elgato video capture device (10020840)?

I have some old hi8 and VHS tapes I would like to edit in Final cut but not sure if the product is compatible. Does mention imovie so I would think it is but just wanted to make sure. It is a cheaper alternative then some of the other pro devices as this is probably just going to be a one time thing for me.

As a side note, my original camera doesn’t work anymore so its not possible to use that for the transfer.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

That device is for capturing TV shows to watch later. NOT for capturing footage into an editable format for FCP. Look at the Canopus line

Actually I just reread the review of the product and it definitely says it is a video capture device to connect to your VHS player or camcorder and is editable with imovie.

iMovie…yes. FCP…no. They capture differently. Consumer vs Professional.

I have a Canopus ADVC300 for sale on ebay you might check out. It’ll take composite video or S-video and stereo audio and spit out to DV firewire. The 300 includes a TBC to stabilize footage.

The Canopus 110 is also a good option.

    Here’s a link if interested

MANY cameras that connect via FireWire will actually let you pass a signal through then if you connect a VHS or similar svideo or RCA video and audio connection to it. If you have a camera that connects via firewire then you may not need anything else.
