I have an editor I work with that’s on a PPC editing system with Final Cut Studio 2. Usually, we’ll both get a drive with all the raw footage copied from P2 cards and one of us will log it and mail the other the project file. I know you can’t revert a project file but I’m wondering if there could be any problems for me trying to log and transfer footage in a FCP 6 project that’s been updated to 7.

    Hey Kevin

You should have no problem receiving FCP 6 logging projects when working in FCP 7 .. you should find the project will update just fine and all logging data present and correct.

If you need to log or edit in FCP 7 and then mail back something that will work just as seamlessly for your co-editor using FCP 6 then be sure to export your project as an XML v4 file (File menu > Export > XML… then choose Format: Apple XML Interchange Format, version 4). A project file in that format should open right up in FCP 6 (File menu > Import > XML…) and your colleague will be good to go.

    Best
