  • Unable to change duration of transition

    Hello forum!

I seem to have this problem often. I have yet to figure out why it happens.

I will import a QT mov video clip (usually with audio) to my sequence/timeline in FCP (6.0.2). This qt clip is one that I have exported from a different application, like Photo to Movie, or, in this most recent case, Flip4Mac.

I add the clip to the timeline. I add a still image to the timeline
ahead of the mov file. I want to do a 20 frame cross-dissolve from the still to the video clip. When I select the edit point, and add the transition, it is always 1 frame long, and I am unable to change the duration. What am I missing?

I seem not to have this problem with dealing only with stills in the timeline, and with video I import from a camera or P2 card.

    Thanks

    Eric

See if this helps you understand why this is happening

This is wild – I was about to post the same problem and I understand why the moderators have posted the stock reply *but* there is an anomaly here. I’ve been an Avid editor for 20 years and know these transition fundamentals inside out. I did one more test before I posted the similar gripe (below) and solved it. Dissolves seem to default to center so if want to start on the first frame of incoming you get the typical centered one frame dissolve. But I don’t want a centered dissolve, I want to start at the cut point and I can right click on that transition all day long and tell it that but it just beeps. The solution I just discovered and the only work-around I know is to copy a diss that starts on the cut and paste that on the transition giving me these problems, and presto 1 sec dissolve. Can anyone shed light on this?

(pre solution dilemma) missing handle on dissolves – false!

I have this chronic problem with FCP(6) where an outgoing scene has lots of pad and I want to dissolve from there to the very beginning of an incoming scene with a dissolve that starts at the transition point. For arguments sake let’s say I have a dissolve favorite that is configured to *start* at transition point but when I drag this diss favorite I get a one frame dissolve! Ctrl click on it to make it longer and all I get is a beep?! – I’m stuck with a 1 frame dissolve unless I lop off some head on incoming which I don’t want to do. It’s maddening because I have plenty of handle and I want the dissolve to start at the cut point. This happens all the time, what am I doing wrong?

It depends how you’re applying the transition. If you use the keyboard shortcut, it will default to centered on edit. If you drag it from the Effects tab of the browser you can place on centered, start on edit, or end on edit, depending on where you have the available handles.

    Hello Tom and Walter,

I feel pretty dumb. How many times have I heard the word “handles” as far as clips in FCP???? hmmm. I went back and added IN and OUT points
to give each clip 10 frames (10 on the IN point of clip b, and 10 on the out point of clip a).

    Need I say more?

Thanks for the response and help as always,

    eric

One last note, I usually right click my transition in the timeline, and
set it to “Start on Edit” or “End on Edit”. but… I am doing this
on still images that are staggered on the timeline (V1,V2,V1, etc)

I will be paying attention to “getting a handle” on clips in the future!

along the same line … even with a second of footage either way i’m getting a one frame dissolve and a beep when i try to alter the duration. not sure whether this has anything to do with one clip being a white slug. i’m trying to fade to white and then up again. the fade to white works fine, the fade up is 1 frame (even though i’ve inserted enough slug). i would rather not have a 1 sec transition though, would like it to be about 6/8 frames ideally. any advice? ideas ?

    ps
humour me : D i don’t know my way around fcp that well, but i did look up as much as i could before asking.
