I am working on a family photo video montage. I created a slide photo show in iphoto and I now have a QT file: dimensions: 640×480 and codecs: dv/dvcpro -ntsc. When I full screen this video file in quick time full screen it looks great.

Now, I imported the qt to fcp and in the canvas monitor looks a little pixelated and if I playback full screen from the fcp, it looks terrible, why is that and how can i see it the way I see it launching it on the QT software? I did go to the RT menu and switched things around but it stills looks very much compressed. Shouldn’t just look the same way it looks in the original qt video file? I didn’t render anything and I don’t think the import options compresses the file, right? I just like to see it, as I edit it, the same way I will see it on my tv set when is all set and done.

Have a look at your sequence settings. Are they the same as your QT? Resolution, framerate, etc.

Are you watching Digital cinema desktop? Don’t set it to full screen.
Is your QT interlaced? And your sequence?

actually there’s one difference, the time base on my clip is 30 fps and in the timeline is 29.97, is this a big deal?

I am about to change the timebase in my seq, but it seems there’s no options for that on the seq settings.

Jaap, thank you for helping out. Yes they are both interlaced. I just noticed that the frame size of the clip is 640×480 and I had my seq frame size at 720×480, there was no render it. Now that you told me to check these numbers, i went to change the seq frame size to 640×480, the same as the clip, and the whole sequence need to be render, how come if you match them they need to be render?

Why is the Digital cinema desktop not an option to view full screen? is the only option a client monitor?

    Thanks a bunch

The sequence: aspect ratio may stil be an issue.
The desktop preview: full screen gives artefacts – but there is also a 1:1option

Thanks a lot for that tip, I switched the ratio to square and the canvas viewing looks much much better.

Jaap, what do you mean by artefacts? It’s my poor tech vobabulary 😉 and do you mean there’s a 1:1 option I can select somewhere or you mean importing the photos straight to fcp? I tried that before but because I have 2000 photos and some of they were really big in size tiff and jpeg files, it was really hard for fcp to handle and iphoto was better for the process.

If I match the seq and clips settings perfectly, why is there I need to render? Is there something I could be missing to check and is not as simple to see? I’m not sure why my clip frame rates are all 640×480 and if I make my seq match i will have to render them all, but if I keep my sequence frame size in 720×480 then no render is needed, any ideas?

    thanks,

720×480 is the proper pixel dimension setting for DV in FCP. DV uses rectangular pixels, but it displays at 640×480 square pixels automatically.

And, you should be using the Easy Setups every time you start a new FCP project. I could swear I referred you the following tutorial once before, which very simply shows teh proper way to setup each and every new FCP project.
