  AE CS3 Memory issues

  Hi all,

  I have searched the forums far and wide for a solution to this and can’t find anything.

  Every time I open a project in After Effects CS3 (on a Windows XP machine), it creates a file in my “C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp” folder called “Photoshop Temp6062772096.” (The number in the filename changes each time.) The file varies in size but can grow to over 1GB. I realize this is some sort of scratch or swap file, but I don’t want it on my system drive.

  I have tried changing my memory settings in AE, but it always writes the file to the same place on my C drive. I also suspected this might be a setting controlled in Photoshop, so I changed my Scratch Disk Setting in Photoshop to only use Drive E. Now Photoshop writes its temp file to Drive E, but After Effects still will only use Drive C. Does anyone know how I get this thing to move somewhere else? My AE memory preferences are below:

  Maximum Memory Usage: 120% = 1.2GB
  Image Cache
  Maximum RAM Cache Size: 60% = 614 MB
  [CHECK] Enable Disk Cache
  Maximum Disk Cache Size: 8000 MB
  Choose Folder: H:\Backup\AE_Cache
  Conformed Media Cache
  Database: H:\Backup\AE_Cache\Media Cache
  Cache: E:\Adobe\After Effects CS3
  [CHECK]Prevent DLL Address Space Fragmentation

  Unfortunately, this is not the case. With “Enable Disk Cache” unchecked, AE is still creating a 1GB+ sized temp file on my C drive.

  I am beginning to wonder if there might be some sort of Windows memory setting that is causing this to happen?

  I played around with Windows’ memory settings and changed it so that the “windows paging file” would be written to a drive other than my system drive. This freed up 1.5 GB on my system drive and made me feel a little better about the rogue AE file that was eating up so much space.

  But now, the AE file (still on drive C) has grown to nearly 3 GB, using virtually all the free space on my system drive.

  Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Am I the only one seeing this “Photoshop Temp” file in relation to After Effects? Could it be that I have a buggy install, or perhaps, that the specific projects I am using are behaving oddly? The Temp file only gets really big with certain projects, with lots of large (Photoshop and Illustrator) assets, and strangely enough, the Temp file drops below 40 mb as soon as I start rendering a preview.

  I have the same issue and can’t solve it.
  This file is created when working with Photoshop files in After Effects.
  I guess the only way to get around that is to have more space on C:\ or to split the Photoshop files into separate tif files for example.
  But it’s a pity, because sometimes it’s really comfortable to work with one Photoshop file which is splitted into layers in AE.
  There should be an option to write this temp file to an other disk…..
