Capture problems
Hi,
I’m having a problem capturing a tape. Final Cut (Express) gives me the error: “Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.”
However, when I play the tape everything is fine. I use a Sony DHR-1000VC to record the tape to Final Cut and it plays fine on that device.
My question is: Is there a way to continue capturing even when Final Cut gives an error?
The tape is quite important as it is part of an interview.

In User Prefs try unchecking “Abort capture on dropped frames.” Also, in Log & Capture you can try changing the Device Control selection to Non-controllable Device in the Capture Settings tab and using Capture Now instead of logging.
Has L&C ever worked with this machine and a different tape? If so, there probably is something wrong with the tape, perhaps bad timecode, control track or dropouts.
It never hurts to trash prefs and repair permissions.

I had this problem too, with an old Sony PD-150, turned out the heads needed adjustment. I turned off the ‘machine control’ and got around it for a while, then finally had to service the camera. Not sure what you’re using to capture, maybe you could try this. Good luck!

However, when I play the tape everything is fine. I use a Sony HDR-HC7E to record the tape to Final Cut Express and it plays fine on that device. Is there a way to continue capturing even when Final Cut gives an error?
I already unchecked “Abort capture on dropped frames” but Final Cut Express still gives the same error when I try to capture. I also tried to capture from 3 other tapes and Final Cut Express continues to give the same error.
I could not find the Log & Capture tab to try and change the Device Control selection to Non-controllable Device in the Capture Settings tab. Is that option available in Final Cut Express? And if so, could someone please explain me where to find it?
And how can I turn off “Machine Control”. Could someone explain me where I can turn off “Machine Controle” please?
To capture the tape is very important to me because it is part of my presentation for Friday.

Hi Jetjel,
Before trying “Uncontrollable device’, try setting (in the Preffs):
– Check “On Timecode Break: Warn after capture”
– Uncheck “warn when capturing
To set the system to “Non Controllable Device” go to Audio/Video Preferences: Device Contol> None.

Thank you for your kind respond.
I’m sorry this may sound stupid. But under “User Preferences” I have 5 tabs: General, Editing, Timeline options and Render Control. Non of these items mention any options about the “Timecode Break”.
Am I looking in the right place? Note that I use Final Cut Express and not FCP.
