  • Newbie XDCAM footage proxy question??

Posted by Bruce Schultz on April 23, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Hi all, I’m new to FCP and NLE editing as a DP/Cameraman who shoots but rarely edits the footage.

I have 10 hrs. of single camera concert footage shot with a Sony EX1 in XDCAM EX 1080/23.98.

I need to do a lot of logging on a laptop but the sheer volume of this footage in it’s original form is overwhelming even for my MBP. I would like to know what is the ideal workflow to convert this footage to a proxy lower rez version which I can easily view (down to 320×240 is OK) as long as the timecode holds so I can have accurate logging notes for online. Any logging tips would also be appreciated.

I know this is probably one of the simplest issues and it’s probably been discussed a multitude of times, but if someone could direct me to a detailed FAQ or just a step-by-step guide to doing this, I would be very grateful.

    I’m running FCP 6.04 on a MBP.

    Hi Bruce,
You can use the Media Manager to batch convert the footage.
OfflineRT (JPEG) would be a good codec to do this.

Thanks Rafael, I have done this but I don’t seem to be able to see or read the original timecode from the camera masters – just the timeline time numbers. Any resolution for this? Obviously I want to conform back to the masters using the original timecode. Also, to use the Video/Timecode function for burn in only burns in the timeline time numbers. What’s the deal?

I don’t understand why doesn’r keep the original TC. Makes no sense.
May be because the MPEG-2 format?
It seems that XDCAM behave different than other codecs. For example you can not Conform XDCAM footage to other time-base.
I work with EX-1 but I haven’t used the MM with this footage. Anyway this should work because thre are many people transcoding XDCAM to Proress for editing (I edit native).
Why don’t you get an external HD? FW 800 would be good.

I have an other question about the same camera. I shoot on 720 p, 50 frame per second using sony EX1. what is the best export setting for getting high quality output? please help me selecting key frame per second and bit rate becasue I am getting some noise and blocks when I view it on DELL laptop in final output if i use H.264, 10 frame per second and 5mb bit rate.

    Thanks,
    Sami
