  • copying files to another hard drive

I am sending some problem clips to the cinematographer on an external hard drive. I copied the bins that I need him to look at to a new FCP project on the external hard drive. In addition, I copied the related media files – the video and the sound clips – on the external hard drive. When I checked whether the clips are OK in the new FCP project on the external hard drive, I found that most of them are Media Offline. When I tried to reconnect the media, it would only reconnect the clips that were not merged with the sound clips. I.E, the video only – clips reconnected fine with the media, but the merged clips did not. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,

    Annu

Anytime you want to move or copy clips, or a project with the media files it is best to go through the media manager. It does all the work for you and makes sure that the media will be connected and present when you open the copied project. All you need to do is select which clips you want to copy, choose file then media manager. In the media section choose copy, select include render files, set your destination in the media destination section, deselect “delete unused media from duplicated items and make sure under project section the duplicate selected items and place into new project IS selected then hit okay and save. Any other method usually leads to sad days of trying to figure out what went wrong. good luck.

    A couple things…

Like mentioned above, Media Manager is your friend. Finder & Spotlight are pretty good, but Media Manager will handle your FCP files a LOT better, because FCP keeps track of all your media files.

Also, when using Media Manager, it is a good idea to only COPY files & not MOVE files. If something happens mid-move (power outage or something), it will be a lot easier to continue if all your source files are still in place.

Next, EVERY Apple FCP trainer will tell you this (I’ve heard it from at least 3 or 4 reps), when you start a new project, reset your scratch disk.

For Project “Friend’s Wedding,” have the Project file, Capture Scracht, Render Files, EVERYTHING in one giant “Friend’s Wedding” folder. When working on “Action Movie,” have everything in the “Action Movie” folder.

Downside to this is that you have to remember each time you start working on a new project you have to re-set your hard drive, but keeping ALL the files in ONE place will make things easier.

Now for your problem, try out Media Manager. It is a feature that isn’t too hard to figure out. If you still need help, post back.

I have multiple bins in my project and I only want certain clips to be copied over to another drive. I’m going to have to open each individual bin and select the files I want to copy over. I can’t select files from multiple bins and have them all copy over at once can i? I’m pretty sure it’s not possible but I wanted to double check with the Creative Cow crew to make sure.
