Toggle Disable All Effects
Posted by Dave Johnson on February 20, 2009 at 6:44 pmIt’s been a while since I needed it so I’ve now shamefully forgotten how to toggle between viewing a timeline clip in its original form and that same clip with all effects applied (vs. turning each effect off one-by-one in the filters window, which is not only slow, but doesn’t allow the same kinds of comparisons).
I’ve searched the various FCP shortcut key lists and forum posts, but couldn’t find this … perhaps because I never knew the proper name.

February 21, 2009 at 12:12 pmBased on a response I got in the main FC forum, I think I need to clarify my question …
I’m aware of the various long ways to compare an original clip and its altered version, but I was referring to the simple way …
There is a combination of 2-3 keys that, when pressed while a clip is selected in the timeline, temporarily shows that clip in its original form in the viewer without the need to remove or turn off the applied effects individually. This keyboard combination is apparently not commonly known since I originally found it in an obscure Final Cut article 3-4 years ago, its not listed in any of the normal FCP keyboard shortcut lists and none of the Final Cut users I’ve talked to knew about it. Knowing that, you would think I would’ve written it down somewhere, but I didn’t since I didn’t think I’d ever forget it.
I suppose I could just keep trying various key combos until I find it, but I’m afraid I’d start changing all kinds of settings without realizing it and cause real problems for myself that way.

I would love to know how then. There must be a really simple way to do this, because the use of it can be really great.
I have a timeline with 2,5 hours of 3 individual HD tracks and I’ve corrected all the colors before starting the editting. It will take more then 3 hours to render it all out so I would love to do this only once, at the end of my edit, when my entire edit is finished. I know there are other ways to do this too, but the functionality of disabling all effects at once (by toggle view) would be terrific right now.If you have recalled the keyboard shortcuts, please let me know on this forum…!
Thx, grtz

January 12, 2010 at 4:12 amI believe the OP was referring to a bastardized use of the Match Frame to Source File (Cmd-Option-F)
That isn’t really what you need … you’d be better off simply disabling effects in the Sequence Settings window > Render Control tab where you can toggle on/off the Render and Playback : Filters option
Hope it helps

November 10, 2010 at 4:24 pmI am trying this but doesn’t seem to work.
I did a long job with no effects. I then did color correction etc.. then my client asked many changes. I would like to switch off the effects rendering, edit as normally in realtime, and then turn the effects on again at the end before rendering.
What happens is nothing. I switch off FILTERS etc. I even select DRAFT but nothing seems to change… the timeline shows still the red line and playback is not reall time (I get the RENDR blu sing). Am I missing something?siRoma di Marcello Mazzilli

November 10, 2010 at 11:58 pmHi Marcello
I just looked and am getting the same result here, so the function seems to be a bit broken in the current FCP version. Try toggling your RT setting (using the RT button at top left of the timeline window) … this fixes it for me.
Example:
Disable/Enable Filters in the Sequence Settings > Render Control tab, then click OK.
Then in the timeline, switch from Unlimited RT to Safe RT and then back to Unlimited RT (or visa versa)Cheers
Andy
