List all bins at top.. then files..?
Posted by Elijah Lynn on January 28, 2009 at 8:41 pmHi,
How do I get all the bins at the top of the browser? When I sort by name all of the bins get mixed in the middle of anything not in a bin. I searched but could not find the answer.
Thanks

January 28, 2009 at 8:45 pmEverything lists alphabetically.
An easy way to do something like is add an exclamation point (!) to the beginning of each Bin name.
Or you can add an a- to the beginning of each name.

January 28, 2009 at 10:17 pmWell that is a bummer. I would call that a bug.
Thanks for confirming it though. I spent at least 30 minutes off and on the past few weeks trying to figure out how to put the bins at the top since I thought it was so obvious a feature it “must” be there.
Hopefully Apple can fix this.
Cheers,
Elijah

Nope, it’s just functionality.

Fix what? Most of us have bins for everything so there’s no reason to list bins first and clips second. If your project is properly organized in bins, then there’s no need for Apple to “fix” anything. Not being harsh here, but it’s up to the editor to properly organize their projects.

January 28, 2009 at 11:02 pmWell, I guess they follow the same lead as Apple’s finder too. Because you can’t sort all folders at the top in finder either and after 10 years on a Windows box it is just part of the workflow.
It wouldn’t hurt to have the option available. It would help a lot of people transitioning from the Windows world. Ubuntu offers this too.

January 29, 2009 at 12:10 amSort your bins by frame size, compressor, any property that sequences have and bins don’t.
Poof – bins are all together.

Except he wants raw clips to be below the bins. When you sort by anything that has a property, the files are also affected.

Your solution will move Sequences down below that don’t match the elements of the bins.
He wants only bins at the top, everything else underneath. Sequence, Files, etc…
Your solution will only apply to those things that don’t match whatever it is you are searching for whether they are bins or anything else.
Again, the easy solution is put an exclamation point in front of each Bin name and sort by Bin.

January 29, 2009 at 1:16 amPerhaps I was unclear.
In your Browser, click on the heading labeled “Duration” to sort all of the contents in the Browser by that field.
Since the Bins have no duration, they jump to the top of the list, in alphabetical order.
I agree that the best practice is to organize your project from the get-go. Sadly I inherit a lot of projects that are a mess. This technique helps.

Ah, that one would work well.
Of course that would drive me nuts since I like organizing either alphabetically or by Media Start.
